There is a lot more to the town of Indore than you think! Once the capital of Holkars, Indore has been home to wide-ranging crafts, cookeries and architectural grandeurs including the ancient as well as the contemporary. Talking about the edifices, Indore is a must visit destination to explore temples. Bada Ganpati and Khajrana being the most visited and popular of all.
Constructed by the Maratha queen, Ahilya Bai Holkar, Khajrana is a beautiful temple dedicated to the Lord Ganesha. It is the place in Indore where locals and tourists pay visits to offer mannats (prayers) with great belief. Situated just three kms from New Palasia Circle, the shrine consists of intricately engraved entrance portraying the scenes of Hindu mythology. Inside of the temple, there is a bright orange idol of Ganesha, which is evidently worshipped by the devotees. There are many shrines adjacent to the premises dedicated to other gods and goddesses such as Shiva, Ram-Sita, Radha-Krishna, etc.
Like every other temple, there are many shops outside Khajrana that sell flowers, sweets, and other puja samagri.
Located in the bustling locality of Indore, Bada Ganpati is another temple devoted to Ganesha. It was put together by a local from Ujjain and houses one of the biggest idols of Ganesha in the world which measures 25 feet from head to foot. Interestingly, the statue supposed to have been made from unique ingredients. Apart from the bricks and limestone, it is assumed that materials such as jaggery, soil collected from seven pilgrimages (Ayodhya, Mathura, Mayapuri, Kashi, Avantika and Dwarka), powder of five gems or pancharatna (Diamond, pearl, emerald, ruby and topaz) and water of holy rivers have been used in building the sculpture. It is also alleged that the frames put-upon in the making are made of gold, silver, iron, and copper.
With its rich ethnicity and history, the city of Indore continues to flourish and impress the tourists. If you haven't been to these two temples then make sure you visit to experience the true divinity!
