Thewa is a 400-year-old art of making gold filigree on the molten glass with patterns inspired by nature and mythology. This inherited art is practiced by a few Soni families in Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh. Initially, the art was used to adorn the boxes and chests gifted to royalty. Today, the expertise has extended to jewellery - earrings, necklaces and rings.
International Recognition
Thewa has not only been the favourite of Indian royalty but there are a few of 250 pieces said to be the part of Queen Elizabeth's collection. British women in the Victorian-era noticed the art and bought elegant pieces from Indian artisans. Some graceful pieces are also displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In 2002, the Government of India had issued a stamp featuring this beautiful art on a plate.
Designs in Thewa
