Stonework in the state; Khajuraho, Sanchi, Gwalior Fort

The architectural landmarks of the state, most notably the UNESCO world heritage site of Khajuraho temples, Stupas of Sanchi and the magnificent Fort in Gwalior, stand testimony to the brilliance accomplished by the stone carvers in past centuries.  From sandstone, granite to marble, many varieties of stones have been given artistic forms of Buddha, Nayikas and deities by the artisans.

Gwalior - The major centre of stone carving

The Gwalior region is to this day a major centre of stone carving. The pink and white stones collected from the Vindhyan ranges have been the main source of their raw material. Take a stroll to the road known as "Gende Waali Sadak", a cluster of shops that forms the hub of stone carving in the area. This pool of ancestral talent makes their living in this centre, making beautiful sculptures, and selling to the world. These murtikars have been working since the time of Scindia rule in the 18th century.
