Stone Carving of Gwalior

Stone Carving is an art where pieces of rough natural stone are shaped and given bejewelled forms. It is one of the processes which is used by an artist while creating a sculpture or architecture. Madhya Pradesh abodes many beautiful specimens of stonework in its temples, and forts.

Stonework in the state; Khajuraho, Sanchi, Gwalior Fort

The architectural landmarks of the state, most notably the UNESCO world heritage site of Khajuraho temples, Stupas of Sanchi and the magnificent Fort in Gwalior, stand testimony to the brilliance accomplished by the stone carvers in past centuries.  From sandstone, granite to marble, many varieties of stones have been given artistic forms of Buddha, Nayikas and deities by the artisans.

Gwalior - The major centre of stone carving

The Gwalior region is to this day a major centre of stone carving. The pink and white stones collected from the Vindhyan ranges have been the main source of their raw material. Take a stroll to the road known as "Gende Waali Sadak", a cluster of shops that forms the hub of stone carving in the area. This pool of ancestral talent makes their living in this centre, making beautiful sculptures, and selling to the world. These murtikars have been working since the time of Scindia rule in the 18^th century.

Ancient collection at Bhopal, Jabalpur & Sanchi Museums

The fine collection of stonework at the state museums of Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur and ASI museum in Sanchi and Chanderi are a tribute to the years of hard of and fine craftsmanship of stone artists of Madhya Pradesh.
