Gwalior Fort, Gwalior

It is also known as one of the most colourful forts in India because of its intricate craftsmanship of turquoise tiling with a hint of glistening yellow. Jahangir Mahal, Orchha


One of the most dominating structures among the forts of Madhya Pradesh is the Jahangir Mahal, located in the Orchha fort complex. This majestic palace was built by Bir Singh Deo in the 16th century. According to folklore, the Jahangir Mahal was constructed to welcome the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who happened to be Maharaja's close friend and guest for one day.

The rooftop of the palace offers picturesque views of River Betwa. The entrance gate leads to the Rai Praveen Mahal who was a courtesan of Raja Inderjeet. Her presence can be felt inside the palace as the walls adorn her large portraits.

Maheshwar Fort, Maheshwar


The enormous Maheshwar fort also known as the Ahilya fort stands on a hill overlooking the holy River Narmada. Documented history suggests that the Holkar Maharaja Malhar Rao ruled the fort, after his son's demise, he handed over the responsibilities to her daughter in law Ahilya Bai Holkar after seeing administrative qualities in her. She rebuilt the fort, constructed ghats and temples as we witness today. The Maheshwar ghat is considered one of the most beautiful ghats in India. The intricate design of the fort, beautiful symmetry of the stairs, colourful boats, and looming walls adds to its unique charm. Jahaz Mahal, Mandu


The architecture of Jahaz Mahal best captures the medieval royal romance of Rani Roopmati & Baz Bahadur, one of the fascinating forts in Madhya Pradesh. The palace is shaped like a ship which is bearing a long and rich history of the town. It has many memorable tales attached to it, according to Jahangir's memoirs, the emperor explained how the palace once served as a residence to him and his queen Noor Jahan, the lamps and lanterns were lighted which casted their reflection on the water. Asirgarh Fort, Burhanpur


Popularly known as the "dakkhan ka darwaza" or gateway to the Deccan, Asirgarh Fort situated in the outskirts of Burhanpur gained importance for its location. As it was perched on the hills of Satpura and well connected to the Narmada and Tapti Rivers, considered one of the important routes from northern India to the Deccan. The name was derived from the Yaduvanshi Ahir King named Asa Ahir who also built the fort.  It houses a temple, mosque and also some British graves. There is a popular legend about the Shiva temple that Ashwatthama, a character in the Indian epic Mahābhārata, used to come to this temple to worship and offer flowers each morning to Lord Shiva.
